Join us in welcoming Dr. Robert Higgins, Surgeon-in–Chief, OSU Wexner Medical Center and Director of Comprehensive      Transplant Center and West Michigan’s own Chef O (Oliver) Hale, Award-winning Chef, Tennis Champion, Award-winning TV host,       AND a 2-time Kidney Transplant Survivor.

                Dr. Higgins earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1981 and his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1985. He completed a general surgery residency at the University Hospitals of Pittsburgh and a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale University. In 1993, Dr. Higgins was a senior registrar in transplantation at Cambridge University’s Papworth Hospital in England. In 2005, he completed a Masters in Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University.

We welcome Dr. Higgins back to the state where he began his surgical career as the Director of heart and lung transplantation at the Henry Ford Hospital. Under his leadership, the transplant team performed the first lung transplant in Southeast Michigan and he went on to create a Medicare-approved lung transplant program in 1997 and a pediatric heart transplant program in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Chef O, a graduate of the University of Toledo with a B.A. in culinary arts and business management, specializes in healthy cooking, including 5 & 7 course French cuisine, Italian, seafood, wild game, and other cuisines. Currently, he is a national healthy lifestyle chef who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chef O is also the Executive Producer and Host of his own weekly award-winning TV cooking show, with appearances on “TOP CHEFS” and “CHOPS".

He has also been a board member of the Executive Committee of the TransAction Council of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), United Network on Organ Sharing (UNOS), Transplant Games of America and the Seniors Meals on Wheels of Kent County and is a new member of the 2014 Patient and Minority Affairs Committee of UNOS.  He was awarded the 1988 Ohio, 1994 Michigan and 2003 National Distinguished Service Award of the NKF and the 2006 Shining Star Award from the State of Michigan. In May 2015, Chef O will be honored at an event for all that he has done locally and nationally. This winter he was appointed to the Board of the UNOS  in Washington D.C.  All this, while living as a 2-time Kidney Recipient.
